6 Top Decluttering Methods Recommended By Experts

A cluttered space not only creates visual chaos but also contributes to mental stress. The accumulation of belongings can gradually overwhelm us, making it challenging to regain control and find a starting point for organizing. If you find yourself in dire need of decluttering, fear not! Help is at hand from the professionals. In this article, we’ll delve into six tried-and-true methods recommended by renowned organizers, providing you with invaluable insights to revolutionize your home. Whether you’re seeking a fresh start or assistance from a one-time cleaning service, these expert-approved strategies will set you on the path to a clutter-free haven.

1. The KonMari method

It is not always easy to pick which of your belongings you want to throw away. The essence of the KonMari method, developed by decluttering expert Marie Kondo, is to choose what to keep instead of deciding what to get rid of.

Get all the items you have in a particular category—for example, your clothes. Once piled up, take each item and hold, feel, and wear them if necessary. While doing this with each garment, ask yourself: does this spark joy in my heart?

2. The four-box method

Take four boxes, containers, or anything reasonably sized to carry several items. Label each one as “keep,” “throw away,” “donate,” and “sell.” As you walk through the rooms, grab objects and decide where to put them.

This method is incredibly convenient for tackling small areas of your home or when you don’t have much time.

3. The minimalist packing party

Joshua Fields and Ryan Nicodemus, experts on minimalism, explain a method extremely beneficial if you want to make radical changes to your space and your life—be prepared, it takes a lot of time.

You’ll need to pack all the things you possess. After packing and stacking, use the next 21 days to take your belongings out, but only unpack the items when you need them.

After those 21 days, take some time to think if you need the things that stay packed, and ask yourself if they add something to your life. Once done, donate or sell everything you decide to get rid of.

4. The 12-12-12 challenge

This method is your best option when you want to do a quick decluttering session. Identify 12 items to donate, 12 items to throw away, and 12 more that need to be returned to their proper place in your home. Easy as that!

5. The 90/90 rule

This one has the advantage of being as time-consuming as you want. Grab an object and remember if you used it in the previous 90 days and if you’ll use it in the next 90. If both answers are “no,” you can get rid of it.

There will be objects that, according to their nature, you haven’t used or will use in that timeframe—like car tools and construction tools. Store those and focus on the ones you keep “just in case.”

6. The minimalist game

Do you like social media? This method has made the rounds on different sites with the hashtag #minsgame. You can give it a try too!

Starting at the beginning of the month, take 1 item to throw away; on day 2, two items; on day 3, three items; and so on. If you followed up throughout the month, you would have gotten rid of 496 objects by day 31! It works better if you tag and challenge your friends.
